Mithila Makhana Institute

Leading the way in Aqua - Based Agriculture

The Mithila Makhana Institute was established to tap into the underutilized potential of Madhesh Province’s wetlands. We focus on uplifting local communities, especially women and marginalized groups, by equipping them with the skills and tools they need to succeed.

Our Vision
We envision a future where wetlands are not just preserved but actively used to create sustainable livelihoods. Our goal is to position Madhesh Province as a center of excellence for aqua-based agriculture through research, innovation and community partnerships.

Our Mission
Strengthen Makhana production and explore other water-based crops like water chestnuts and lotus. Provide support to farmers to enhance productivity and improve livelihoods.Promote sustainable wetland management to protect ecosystems and create green jobs.

Our Story: Empowering Communities through Agriculture

In 2023, the Mitahara Nutritional Service and Research Center, in collaboration with Mahesh Traders, a local Makhana trader in the Mahottari district initiated the Makhana Rozgar Program with support from GGGI’s Terai Challenge Fund. This program set out to enhance the market presence of Nepali Makhana while fostering socioeconomic growth within the Sahani
(Mallaha) community in Matihani, Mahottari. The Mallaha people, an indigenous group in Madhesh Province, have traditionally worked as boatmen and fishermen. For generations, they have faced economic and social challenges, including poverty, limited education and restricted access to healthcare.

The program set out to create jobs, strengthen the Makhana value chain and improve production through modern facilities and the development of value-added products. It has already made a meaningful impact—establishing a Makhana processing center, generating over 20 jobs, and introducing improved cultivation, harvesting, and processing techniques. These advancements have not only boosted production but also empowered farmers with new skills and greater market
awareness. Collaborating with neighboring government institutions in India and local government bodies,
we’ve gained critical technical expertise that has propelled the project forward. However, Makhana production in Nepal remains far below potential, with current yields at just 73 metric tons annually. Madhesh Province offers a vast opportunity for growth, with 500 ponds and 81 lakes ready for cultivation. Nepal currently uses pond-based cultivation methods, but India’s shift to field-based systems has shown the potential to double yields—a strategy we are preparing to
adopt.

In response to these challenges and opportunities, the Mithila Makhana Institute was founded with a bold vision: to transform Madhesh Province into a thriving hub for Makhana and other water-based crops such as water chestnuts and lotus. We are building a center for innovation, sustainable practices and farmer empowerment, working closely with local communities to
improve productivity, develop value-added products, and open new markets. With the goal of reaching 500 metric tons of Makhana production within five years, we are committed to driving economic growth, creating green jobs, and preserving wetlands. Our journey is fueled by a belief that with the right tools, resources, and partnerships, Madhesh Province
can become a leader in sustainable aqua-based agriculture, empowering communities and ensuring
a prosperous, sustainable future.
